Carbon capture technologies present a techno-economically efficient opportunity towards matching the ambitious targets and pledges to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Australia by 2030. The accelerated decarbonization targets would require a national toolbox approach in which many technical solutions would be required hand in hand. Hydrogen and its carriers are expected to be a key component in the transition. A strategic approach to reduce infrastructure costs is to consider industrial synergies and maximize the value of hydrogen projects by utilizing available side streams such as oxygen and waste heat in a net-Zero emission ecosystem. Coupling carbon capture and green hydrogen projects integrates the three pillars of decarbonization: the advancement of variable renewable sources, enable waste and circular economy applications, and decarbonize the remaining emissions from hard to abate sectors.
This presentation will discuss the development timeline of Oxyfuel based carbon capture technologies towards commercial operation to capture thousands of CO2 annually. The findings from a recent feasibility study to integrate such capture systems with 100s MWe electrolyzer plants lead to reducing the cost of e-fuel production plants. In addition, recently awarded Horizon Europe funded projects CaLby2030 and HERCCULES to decarbonize waste and biomass to energy, cement and steel plants will be presented.
