Current battery technology has many problems and is, ironically, far from ‘green.’ It’s commonly sourced from scarce minerals, mined and processed in challenging and ethically questionable ways. Moreover, battery components are often highly flammable, corrosive and riddled with end of life processing issues. Given the world urgently needs massive quantities of large scale storage to firm energy grids, and equally large quantities to power EVs, e-trucks, e-buses etc, we need something better.
An Australian-made solution is close at hand and made from that most commonplace of things – water. Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) are being made from water-based electrolytes, undercuttinwg the costs of all other forms of utility-scale storage while substantially exceeding the performance of all competing RFBs.

Similarly, supercapacitors are also being made with a water-based electrolyte with no compromise on performance. Costs are massively reduced compared with current technology, making them likely to become part of the power solution in every type of e-mobility, from e-bikes, EVs, e-buses, e-trucks to light rail.

Given both technologies are fully recyclable, non-flammable, non-corrosive, use only abundant materials with no complex supply chains, this is truly a game-changing proposition.
